Union Apprentices

1. Research Career Paths

Before applying for an apprenticeship, you’ll need to choose your specialty — either HVAC Sheet Metal or HVAC Service. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT STEP. Once you apply under a specific specialty, you cannot switch without restarting the entire application process.

You also cannot change your specialty once you’ve been accepted into the program. For example, if you begin as an HVAC Sheet Metal apprentice and later decide you’d prefer HVAC Service, you would need to reapply the following year. Think of it this way: unlike a college major, this is a fixed choice, so be sure to research both programs carefully before making your decision.

The five-year HVAC SHEET METAL APPRENTICESHIP program teaches apprentices drafting, shop fabrication and field installation for all types of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

The five-year HVAC SERVICE APPRENTICESHIP program instructs apprentices in the theory and design of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

2. Connect With Union Contractors

Did you know you can work for our union contractors even before joining the apprenticeship program? We highly recommend reaching out to Local 91 contractors to learn more about opportunities related to the apprenticeship. Having hands-on experience not only strengthens your application and improves your score, but it also helps give you a real-world view of the difference between the HVAC Sheet Metal and HVAC Service apprenticeship tracks.

Please note: Working for a union contractor DOES NOT guarantee a spot in the apprenticeship, but it’s a great way to build skills and grow your professional network. Our contractors are the best resource for learning about wages, career opportunities and what it takes to succeed as a member of Local 91.
